DIXFIELD — Anyone with outdated prescription drugs may turn them over to the Dixfield Police Department for disposal from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Sgt. Jeff Howe said prescriptions may be in liquid or pill form. Whether needles will be accepted is not yet determined, he said.

The National Prescription Day Take-Back program is sponsored by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration with the participation of local law enforcement agencies and public health organizations. A DEA official will collect the medicines at 2 p.m. They will then be disposed of at various sites throughout the country.

According to a news release, both prescription and over-the-counter drugs that are unwanted, unused or expired will be accepted.

The goal of the program is to keep drugs out of the hands of people without prescriptions. According to studies, a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends. Also, many people dispose of such medications by flushing them down the toilet or discarding them in the garbage. Such disposal presents a health hazard, according to the release.

The acceptance of the drugs will be free and anonymous.
