LEWISTON — On Tuesday, Oct. 5, organist Gunter Kennel will present a program on the Casavant organ at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. He has made appearances as a concert organist and conductor all over Europe as well as in Israel and the United States.

Kennel, who studied sacred music, organ and theology from 1980 to 1989 in Munich and London, is also an ordained Protestant pastor and earned a doctorate in theology. He has published essays on subjects related to practical theology, theory of music and organ building. He has been a lecturer of sacred music on the faculty of theology at Humboldt-University in Berlin since 1995.

In 1992, Kennel was appointed kantor (organist and choirmaster) of the Passionskirche and the Kirche Zum Heiligen Kreuz in Berlin-Kreuzberg. In the latter, he plays the three-manual romantic organ produced by E. & G. G. Hook of Boston in 1870.

Kennel’s concert programs often include stylistic contrasts and multiple interpretations, and are sometimes combined with scenic elements. In 1998, he produced the CD “passion,” which includes several cross-over pieces in a trumpet/saxophone/organ arrangement.

In September 2002, he was appointed chief supervisor for sacred music of the Protestant diocese of Berlin and Brandenburg. In that function, he produced CDs on historic organs in the Brandenburg area.

Since 2006, he has been president of the assembly of all Landeskirchenmusikdirektoren and the heads of the departments of sacred music at the music academies in Germany.

The concert at the basilica will begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call Scott Vaillancourt at 240-9419 or visit www.SaintsPeterandPaul.us.
