AUGUSTA — Maine attorney Severin Beliveau will lead a community roundtable discussion on the Franco-American experience in Maine at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine.
Presented as part of the center’s ongoing Series 360 that premiered last winter with Hollywood and The Holocaust, the current series – In the Shadow of Vacationland: A Hidden History of Maine – features Wednesday night films, lectures, community roundtables and special Saturday field trips. All events will be held at the Michael Klahr Center on the campus of the University of Maine at Augusta, and are free and open to the public.
In the Shadow of Vacationland: A Hidden History of Maine explores the state’s controversial legacy of human rights and hate speech, past and present, focusing on the Franco-American, Scots-Irish, African-American and Native American experience in Maine.
Other participants in the Sept. 22 roundtable will include: Rita Dube, director of the Franco-American Heritage Center and a Lewiston resident; Yvon Labbe of the France American Centre and professor at the University of Maine in Orono; Lucille Clouthier, a retired state employee and native of Augusta; Raymond Fecteau, active member of Le Club Calumet; and Waterville’s Maine State Senator and Franco activist, Lisa Marrache, M.D.
Contact the center at 621-3530 for a complete calendar of Series 360 events or find the HHRC on Facebook and at www.hhrc.uma.edu.
