Yesterday afternoon the girls of the YMCA at Bates College gave the girls of the incoming class an informal reception on Mt. David. First there was a very short receiving line, then Mrs. Chase gave the girls a short address of welcome. Miss Campbell ’12 gave them an idea of the social life of Bates; Miss Macomber ’12 addressed them on athletics at Bates and lastly Miss Parsons ’11 told them a little of Silver Bay. Refreshments were then served and a social hour was enjoyed.

A two-page color reproduction of a painting by Marsden Hartley, former Lewiston resident, appears in a U.S. Information Service magazine published for release in Communist Poland. The artist’s oil painting depicts a Maine coast scene near Reid State Park.

OXFORD — A special town meeting has been scheduled for Oct. 2 at the Town Hall to decide whether to extend a moratorium on residential subdivisions in Oxford or establish interim standards.
After conferring with the board of selectmen Thursday night, the planning board and selectmen scheduled the special town meeting.
After electing a moderator, voters will be asked to see if the town will vote to extend the moratorium on residential subdivisions.
