This is in response to the column Sept. 6 about Social Security that was printed on the editorial page.
As I remember it, Sen. Robert Byrd of Virginia took money for pet projects and was supposed to put an IOU for the amount taken from Social Security. The receiving state should return any money received to the Social Security fund, as should others who are indicted.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt certainly never expected that members of Congress would use money from Social Security as their slush fund.
I congratulate our Maine senators for not following suit.
