FARMINGTON — Literacy Volunteers of Franklin and Somerset counties, a nonprofit, United Way supported organization, trains tutors to teach people to improve their reading skills.
The organization will offer a 13-hour Basic Reading Tutor Training Workshop this fall at the Adult Basic Education Office. The workshop will begin on Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. and will continue on Saturdays, Oct. 9 and 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
There are more than 100,000 adults in Maine who can not do things such as fill out a job application, read the directions on a medicine bottle, read a notice their child brings home from school, read a bedtime story to their child or just curl up with a book.
There is a $20 fee for materials, but scholarships are available. To sign up, call 778-3460 or toll free 800-322-5455. Students in both counties are waiting for tutors.
