WATERVILLE — Sister Cecile Roux, formerly known as Sister Yvonne Marie, 84, died Thursday, Sept. 23, at Mount St. Joseph.

She was born in Lewiston, June 24, 1926, the daughter of George and Yvonne (Bourgea) Roux Sr. Cecile received her early education at Holy Family School in Lewiston and later at the Academy of St. Joseph in South Berwick. Her college education was begun at St. Joseph College in Portland and completed at the American College in Madurai, South India, after which she obtained her master’s at the University of Bombay, India.

She entered the novitiate of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Lyon in South Berwick in 1943 and made her religious profession in July 1945. Her teaching assignments in Maine were at Sacred Heart Academy in Jackman and St. Rose of Lima School in Chisholm. In Sept. 1949, she left for India, where she served a total of 28 years — 25 at Fatima College for Women and two terms of office in the administration of the Indian Province. Sister Cecile who always felt she was a citizen of the universe, served lovingly for nearly four decades outside the United States.

From 1977 to 1987, she was part of the General Team of the Congregation in Lyon, France. After 38 years outside the U.S.A., Sister Cecile returned to her homeland, where she served 10 years as coordinator of the Fontbonne Community of retired sisters at Mount St. Joseph in Waterville. This period was followed by volunteer work at Living Water Spiritual Center in Winslow, also at Mount St. Joseph in visitation and communion ministry to the residents. She retired to Mount St. Joseph in March 2008.

She is survived by a sister, Theresa Michaud; four nieces and two nephews, all of Hartford, Conn.

She was predeceased by her sister, Marguerite Wright; and her husband, Everett.
