Bridge club

RUMFORD — The Rumford Bridge Club met for its final night of the season on Sept. 22 with a pizza party followed by bridge playing.

The results of the game were: first place, Jennifer Cohen and Debbie Stewart; second place, Ozzie Swett and Jim Stewart; third place, Sue Farnum and Waner Holman.

Demerritt Cemetery

PERU — The Demerritt Cemetery Association requests that all ornamental items be removed from the lots by Friday, Oct. 15. Fall decorations may be left on, but must be picked up by Nov. 5.

Basket bingo

NORWAY — Responsible Pet Care will host Longaberger Bingo on Sunday, Oct. 24, at the Norway Legion Hall, Main Street. Doors will open at 11 a.m. and bingo will start at 12:30 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for 16 games of regular bingo. There will be refreshments, coverall games, raffle baskets  and a 50/50 raffle. For more information or advance tickets, call 743-8679.

Thrift shop open

SOUTH PARIS — The Thrifty Gift Shop, 659 Park St., Route 26, will reopen at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1. A free raffle and refreshments will be available. There will also be a fundraiser yard sale that day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Proceeds from the shop benefit the food pantry. Donations and volunteers are always needed. Ongoing shop hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays. For more information, call Peggy at 357-7072.

Socrates Cafe

WATERFORD — A Socrates Cafe gathering will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4, at the Waterford Library. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month. The group offers a forum to discuss current topics and ideas in a friendly atmosphere, where divergent views will be welcome.

The topic for the meeting is “Fixing the Breaks in our Government: What Needs to Be Done?” The moderator will be Richard Balian. For more information, call 583-6957 or e-mail the library at [email protected].

Volunteers needed

LEWISTON — Beacon Hospice provides ongoing training and informational sessions for people who are interested in becoming a visiting volunteer. The sessions are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Thursday in the office at 55 Lisbon St., Suite 2600, and include an introduction into the disciplines of nursing, social work, chaplaincy, bereavement and community volunteerism.

Volunteer opportunities are currently available in Bridgton, Canton, Fryeburg, Lewiston, Norway, Oxford, South Paris, Rumford, West Paris and elsewhere in Androscoggin and Oxford counties. Call Justin, volunteer coordinator, at 784-4242, ext. 11 for an application and initial interview.
