100 years ago, 1910

The Misses Roberge will hold their millinery opening on Wednesday afternoon and evening of this week. They have recently returned from London and Paris and have all of the latest styles in headgear. While abroad, they arranged to have all of the latest creations sent direct to their store in Lewiston.

50 years ago, 1960

Capt. Joseph H. Farrand of the Lewiston Police Department’s traffic bureau announced yesterday that Russell Street has been made a throughway to facilitate the movement of traffic through that section of the Textile City.

Stop signs halting traffic on Russell Street, at College Street, have been removed.

The signs were placed on College Street, where traffic will now have to stop. This will slow College Street traffic, making it safer for students at Pettingill School and Bates College, both located on College Street in the immediate vicinity of Russell Street.

25 years ago, 1985

With weather forecasters predicting that Hurricane Gloria could swirl past the coast of Maine, the probability of high winds and rain slamming into central Maine calls for residents to take precautions to protect themselves and their property.

Peter V. Gagnon, director of the Androscoggin County Bureau of Civil Emergency Preparedness, Thursday urged area residents to remain at home during the storm and to venture out into the raging elements “only if absolutely necessary.”
