RUMFORD — Rumford Group Homes Inc. invites the public to its Washington Street Transitional Housing Program open house from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30.
The Washington Street Transitional Housing Program is a two-unit apartment building for homeless youth and young families in Rumford. The priority population is homeless youth and young adults ages 18 to 28, including pregnant and parenting females, and the program provides supportive housing, case management services and assistance in developing independent living skills. Youth can remain in the program for up to two years while they develop the skills needed for self-sufficiency.
The project received funding from MaineHousing to purchase and renovate the building. “Safe and affordable housing for homeless youth and young families in our community is a huge need,” said Alan J. Monier, Rumford Group Homes Inc. executive director. “We are pleased to be able to develop this important project with the support of MaineHousing, with whom we have successfully partnered in the past.”
Renovation of the project included new vinyl siding, installation of Energy Star vinyl replacement windows, replacement of the roof and heating system and complete renovation of the kitchens and bathrooms. In addition, the two units are fully furnished with Energy Star appliances as well as new furnishings.
With a grant award from the JTG Foundation, the apartments will be fully furnished. The JTG Foundation provided the financial support to purchase the appliances and furnishings for both units including beds, dressers, couches, a washer and dryer and new stoves and refrigerators.
