I read the article about the cemetery in Mechanic Falls (Sept. 21). In defense of David Ferland, he is one of the most genuine, compassionate and ethical young people that I know.
From a young age, he has always had very good morals and an excellent work ethic. Perhaps that is why he took offense to the notion that he had mowed only three times a year.
Ferland is one of those people who, if he says he is going to do something, he does it. He has always been passionate about his work and takes pride in it.
Maybe he left a note in haste, but truly he is the last person that anyone should fear. He is a nice guy who just wanted to do a good job.
I don’t believe that he was trying to be threatening to anyone by saying that he would not power-wash the stone, and would only mow three times per year. I think he was feeling unappreciated because he is one of those people who usually gives his all (and then some) when working and, perhaps, felt attacked.
I think he acted quickly and should have taken a moment to breathe first, but Brenda Manchester should not feel unsafe to go to the cemetery; Ferland is no threat.
