MEXICO — Police are investigating two thefts Sept. 25 on the Backkingdom Road that they believe are connected.

Sgt. Roy Hodsdon said the department received a call from a resident at 7:57 a.m. reporting the theft of a global positioning system device and a cell phone, valued at $330, from an unlocked vehicle parked in his yard.

A 3:43 p.m., the department received a call from another Backkingdom Road resident, who reported that someone entered his garage and took a metal detector valued at $640.

The department is investigating those two incidents as well as a what police believe is another in the Fourth and Fifth streets areas. There have been eight in that neighborhood since late August.

Hodsdon said a Fourth Street resident reported at 1:51 p.m. Sept. 16 that someone had taken two outdoor speakers from his porch. The speakers were valued at $150.

He said he is continuing his investigation of the spree with the pursuit of several suspects.

During the past few weeks, someone has entered garages or sheds and taken a variety of items ranging from filled gasoline cans to bicycle parts and siphon hoses.

In other police news, vehicles driven by Mark H. Cyr Jr., 29, of Granite Street, Mexico, and Lane McDonald, 67, South Rumford Road, Rumford, collided at 9:45 a.m. Sept. 25, on Main Street. Cyr’s 1998 four-door Ford sedan sustained $1,500 damage. McDonald’s 2006 Toyota sport utility vehicle sustained $4,500 damage.
