F. L. Hayes of Ash Street, Lewiston, has recently found another tourmaline pocket in his feldspar mine in Poland, from which he took $15,000 worth of pure tourmaline crystals. A few weeks ago, Mr. Hayes found a pocket from which he took $50,000 worth of gems. His mining operations are attracting wide attention.

Postmaster Joseph Roger Albert announced yesterday the 23rd annual Letter Writing Week will be observed in Lewiston the week of Oct. 2 to Oct. 8.
“A letter remains the most economical, longest lasting, and sincerest means of extending greetings, communicating social news, and exchanging ideas,” said Postmaster Albert.
Albert suggested that individuals write at least two letters during Letter Writing Week: one to a friend or relative from whom you have not heard in a long time, and the second as a reply to a friend or relative who recently wrote to you.
25 years ago, 1985
“As long as a person can walk and has two left feet, he qualifies as a candidate for western-style square dancing,” according to a spokesman for the Twin Cities Squares, who are offering classes in this style dancing with registration open until Oct. 1.
Shirley Conant, president of the Twin Cities Squares, explained that western-style square dancing is the national square dance of the United States, and a bill was passed recently making this so. She said that the Twin Cities Squares have been in existence since 1968.
