AUBURN — Transportation planners are looking for ways to make New Auburn more walkable and will discuss options at a four-hour workshop Oct. 6.
“We’re going to be discussing the things that make a community walkable, and then we’ll be going to areas of New Auburn to see how it compares,” Joan Walton, transportation planner for the Androscoggin Transportation Resource Center, said. “Then, we’ll sit down again to discuss what we’ve seen.”
Walton said the work from the Oct. 6 meeting will be built into a report to the city on potential improvements. The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. in the Barker Mill Arms Community Room at 143 Mill St.
After an hour-long presentation about pedestrian issues and what makes a street attractive to walkers, the group will split up and head outside.
“We don’t just see this as a discussion, but a way to impact the community,” Walton said. “Making a community more walkable can actually be an economic development tool. It’s a way to make a community more livable.”
The walking workshop is open to anyone interested, including city officials and councilors, business owners, residents and students.
