Inconsistency struck again, the Lewiston Maineiacs once more ran into a hot goaltender, and for the second time in three road games, they left the rink with a loss.

Cedrick Henley, older brother of Maineiacs’ forward Sam Henley, scored twice, added an assist and even fought to complete the Gordie Howe hat trick in leading his homestanding Val d’Or Foreurs to a 4-1 victory over Lewiston in front of 2,092 at Centre Air Creebec.

“We had a slow start and we ran into a hot goalie, and that’s a very bad combination,” Maineiacs’ coach J.F. Houle said.

The Maineiacs had a hard time matching the Foreurs’ speed in the first period, and penalty trouble bit them. Marc-Alain Begin and Henley netted power-play goals 29 seconds apart near the midway point of the opening frame.

“It was exactly what we told the players last night, you have to keep your feet moving all the time,” Houle said. “We got a little unlucky in that both big penalties. The sticks were high, they drew blood and they got four minutes on each one. But we need to keep the feet moving. You could tell we’d played two games this week and they hadn’t.”

Olivier Archambault added another in the final minute of the first to give goaltender Jacob Gervais-Chouinard all the cushion he needed.

“He was outstanding; he made some great saves,” Houle said.

Lewiston outshot Val d’Or 22-16 the rest of the way, including 13-7 in the second period, but couldn’t get enough past the 18-year-old netminder.

“I was really happy the way we played in the second and into the third period,” Houle said. “We bounced back well, but it was too late.”

Antoine Houde-Caron slipped the puck past Gervais-Chouinard on a shorthanded break early in the second, but Henley added his second of the night early in the third to put the Maineiacs away.

Lewiston caps its four-games-in-five-days swing through the Abitibi-Temiscamingue region of Quebec with a 4 p.m. matinee at Val d’Or on Sunday, and the Maineiacs next play at home Friday against the Victoriaville Tigres at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
