GRAFTON NOTCH — A New Hampshire woman was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway Saturday evening after rescue crews carried her off a hiking trail in Grafton Notch State Park.
Newry fire Chief Bruce S. Pierce reported Sunday that a 53-year-old woman from Merrimack, N.H., was hiking on the Appalachian Trail with her husband earlier in the afternoon when she suffered an ankle injury. Pierce said that the couple was about one-half mile from the parking lot on Route 26.
The woman, whose name was not being released, was reported injured by her husband shortly after 3 p.m. Pierce said that more than 10 emergency personnel from Newry Fire Department, Bethel Fire and Rescue, Mahoosuc Mountain Rescue and the Maine Warden Service responded to the scene. Combined efforts brought the woman out of the woods about 5:20 p.m.
