FRYEBURG — For the first time since the women’s division for Woodsmen’s Field Day began in 2004, Fryeburg Fair crowned a new champion this year.
Mary Beth Dooly of Waterport, N.Y., captured top honors over six-time defending champion Nancy Zalewski of Plymouth, Wis., at the 43rd Woodsmen’s Field Day on Monday.
Ironically, the two of them set the only record of the day in the women’s crosscut at 8.66 seconds.
The two competitors tied for the championship lead among the 29 women competing. Qualifying events are underhand chop, bucksaw, ax throw and the crosscut. The winner was determined by the total of higher place finishes.
Champion woodsmen of the day was Mike Eash of Coatsville, Pa., and Charlie Woitkun of Preston, Conn., won the master’s title. Champion logger went to John Wescott of Hollis, and Dale Mills of Parsonsfield earned the champion trucker award. There were 111 competitors.
Once again, the $500 prize for anyone breaking the ax throw record went unclaimed. Several competitors are tied at 25 based on five bull’s-eye throws. Woitkun came close with a 24.
The competition marked the conclusion of a 20-year career of competition by Andy and Ericka Schreiner of Fulton, N.Y. The couple decided they will travel next year, but they went out in style. He won the men’s crosscut with Paul Pfenninger of Scottsville, N.Y., she won the women’s ax throw, and together they finished second in the Jack and Jill crosscut. Andy, a former champion woodsman, also finished third in the tree felling.
