PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Actors portray patients, sophisticated mannequins mimic human conditions, and operating and trauma rooms look like the real thing.

They’re all part of Maine Medical Center’s new, cutting-edge simulation center, which was unveiled Tuesday. Medical students and staff will be trained in the Portland hospital’s 18,000-square-foot center.

The operating and trauma rooms are identical to those at Maine Medical. The $5.8 million facility also has a skills lab, where students can practice stitching sutures and build their patient communication skills working with actors who pretend to be patients.
