The Saints are starting to like this Mountain Valley Conference change.

For the second consecutive year since the school switched conference affiliations, the Saints’ golf team crushed the competition at the annual MVC state team and individual qualifier at Natanis and will represent the conference at the state Class C tournament this weekend.

All eight St. Dom’s golfers playing Wednesday earned a berth in the state individual tourney, and the team’s score of 320 (derived from the team’s top four finishers) was 47 better than runner-up Dirigo. The Cougars also will play in Saturday’s Class C state title tourney.

Danny Nadeau led the Saints with a 76, just three shots off the pace of medalists Seth Sweet (Madison) and Jordan Jones (Wiscasset). Joe Bryant carded a 77, Zack Deblois a 78 and Cody Ridrigue rounded out the team’s top four at 82.

Anthony Fagone (83), Dylan Rodrigue (83) and Isaac Reed (85) also qualified for the individual tournament, to be held one week following the state tourney, and the Saints’ Amanda Turcotte qualified for the state schoolgirl tourney with a 103.

Justin Conant led the Cougars with an 88 and is their lone individual qualifier. Other area athletes also qualified individually are Kyle Foster of Winthrop and Kyle Peterson of Telstar.

Boys’ soccer

Hebron 4, Hyde 2

BATH — Samuel Blanchet and Jock Cooperrider each scored two goals as Hebron Academy shook of Hyde, 4-2, in a boys’ soccer game on a soggy Wednesday.

The Lumberjacks got on the board in the first half when Blanchet scored, with Sang Hoon Choo and Geno Wentworth earning assists.

But Hyde responded when Tyrone Freston scored his first of two goals in the first half. Cooperrider scored to give the lead back to Hebron, but that was short-lived when Freston found the net again.

Women’s soccer

Colby 4, UMF 0

WATERVILLE After posting seven shutouts a year ago, the Colby College women’s soccer team is up to five so far this season after taking a 4-0 win over University of Maine at Farmington in a steady rain on Wednesday.

Marissa Simmons scored two goals and added one assist, while first-year forward Emily Anderson scored her first collegiate goal.

Simmons scored her first goal at 19:36 in a play that started off a corner kick. The ball was knocked out to defender Kat McCarrick, who quickly pushed the ball through the middle to Simmons on the left side of the goal. Simmons made it 2-0 at intermission when she scored with 7:19 to play off an assist from Annie Papadellis.

Field hockey

Bowdoin 9, UMF 0

BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College field hockey team scored less than two minutes in and never looked back in a 9-0 win over the University of Maine-Farmington on Wednesday evening at Ryan Field. The Polar Bears, ranked sixth in the latest Division III National Poll, improve to 7-0 this season. The Beavers fall to 8-2.

The Polar Bears wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Katie Herter split several Farmington defenders and fed a pass to Catherine Smith on the back post for a one-goal lead at 1:54. Less than six minutes later, Bowdoin earned a penalty shot after a Farmington foul on the goal line. Ingrid Oelschlager rapped home a penalty stroke and then, later in the half, dished to Ella Curren for a blast from the right wing to make it 3-0 at the break.

The Polar Bears exploded for six goals in the second half to put the contest out of reach. Elizabeth Clegg scored twice within a two minute span early in the second half before Katie Riley scored her third goal of the season to increase the lead to 6-0. Molly Paduda’s first career goal came with under five minutes to go and Kassey Matoin rounded out the scoring with a pair of tallies in the final three minutes.
