AUGUSTA — The Maine Breast Health Leadership Awards were presented at the 13th annual Silver Tea hosted by First Lady Karen Baldacci at the Blaine House on Sept. 30.
This year’s recipients in the professional category included Jennifer McCormack, RN, BSN, MBA, breast and cervical health program coordinator for the Healthy Community Coalition in Wilton.
McCormack, a resident of Carrabassett Valley, has coordinated the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program Franklin County partnership for eight years. To address the challenges of women living in the county’s rural communities, she designed and implemented outreach activities including door-to-door visits where phone service is lacking and a Mobile Health Unit to provide free screening services.
She has increased the program enrollment and promoted breast and cervical screenings and awareness of breast cancer to the general population in Franklin County.
“Jennifer constantly strives to find ways to help women afford screenings or get the support they need when facing cancer,” said Selina McGlauflin of the Maine Breast and Health Cervical Health Program. “Many people do this as part of the day to day operations of their job, but few go above and beyond like Jennifer.”
The Maine Leadership Award for Breast Health, created in 1998, is a collaborative effort of the American Cancer Society, the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program, the Maine Cancer Foundation, the Maine Breast Cancer Coalition, Maine Breast Nurse Network and Maine Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Leadership awards are presented annually during October to recognize Maine residents who have made contributions to promoting breast health, improving understanding of breast cancer or working toward the elimination of the disease at the national, state or local level.
Nominations are accepted year round and nomination forms can be found at www.cancer.org/blainehousetea.
