DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have an old prom dress as well as a couple of bridesmaid dresses that I would like to donate. I was hoping to donate them to a Cinderella Project here in Lewiston or Auburn. I want them to go to local girls who can’t afford prom dresses and would like to go to the prom. Can someone recommend someplace? — Michelle, pandora33355@aol.com

ANSWER: In June, Sun Spots got a letter from the LHS Students Transitioning Experiencing Homelessness Program looking for prom dresses and suits to donate to homeless youths. The contact information provided was for Mary Seaman, 795-4190, ext. 2214, mseaman@lewistonpublicschools.org; or Annie Doran, 795-4190, ext. 2215, adoran@lewistonpublicschools.org

Also, the Community Little Theater in Lewiston rents prom gowns for $50. After the prom the person can have the gown cleaned and returned to the Community Little Theater and get $25 back. For more information, call Suzanne Carbonneau at 212-6813.

There may be other programs as well. If groups write to Sun Spots, she will spread the news.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: A few years ago, I purchased from a man in the Pownal area who made cribbage boards a beautiful carving of a loon on water. He said it was made from cherry wood.

Would anyone know if he is still with us, or know of someone else who does this?

DEAR SUN SPOTS: We would like to invite everyone to attend and participate in the Lewiston-Auburn community-wide event to remember and give thanks to all who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The seventh annual Veterans Day prayer service will be Thursday, Nov. 11, at 6:30 p.m. at Holy Family Church. Bring a fellow vet, a friend, your dad, mom, brothers and sisters, anyone you know who is a vet or is currently serving our country.

We need veterans and those currently serving to act as a flag bearer and two as escorts for their respective branches of service, along with the U.S. and POW/MIA flags. Anyone currently serving is encouraged to wear their uniform along with their medals earned if wearing Class A uniforms. Retirees and honorably discharged veterans may also wear their uniforms at this service (DOD Instruction 1334-01).

If your uniform has fallen victim to CCS (civilian closet shrinkage), it is permissible for retirees and honorably discharged veterans to wear military awards on appropriate civilian clothes (suitcoat/jacket and tie) for gatherings like Veterans Day. The choice of either full-size medals or miniatures is an individual one.

The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2009 states that veterans in civilian clothing are now permitted to render the military hand salute when the U.S. flag is raised and lowered, passes in review, during the pledge of allegiance and the playing of the national anthem. If you would like to participate, please call me at 375-4883. — Rog Hamann, RusticYankee72@aol.com
