I am writing in support of Sen. John Nutting’s bid for re-election in Senate District 17, which includes Lisbon.

As a retired teacher, I still realize the need for scarce educational funding to go to public schools. Sen. Nutting values the same thing and is opposed to school vouchers and charter schools, which take taxpayer money and redirect it to private and religious schools.

Such schools not only siphon money but also the most able students from public schools. Both vouchers and charter schools are not allowed in Maine for those very reasons, but Sen. Nutting’s opponent, Garrett Mason, who was a product of such schools, favors vouchers and charter schools.

I urge the voters of Lisbon to protect their tax dollars for education and vote again for John Nutting in Senate District 17.
