Both Gail Marcouillier and Steve Myers correctly identified where this photo (which ran on Oct. 4) was taken — in front of the Peck building, looking across Main Street toward the building housing Zimmies comic store.
Myers, who was Lewiston’s community development director at the time, is the man who is gesturing while talking to the woman wearing a white jacket. The photo was taken during the Mill Fest in 1985, possibly 1986, according to Myers.
The trolley, rented for the event, took groups through the mill district. Myers was a tour guide. The Peck Building, owned in this post-department store, pre-L.L. Bean period by Bill Johnson, was used as the staging area for tours.
There was the trolley tour; a tour to Gulf Island Dam; walking tours of downtown buildings highlighting the old meeting halls and theaters that occupied the top floors of many of these buildings; and tours to manufacturing plants around Lewiston-Auburn.
Lisbon Street was closed to traffic to allow for music and other entertainment.
According to Myers, The Mill Fest was held twice.
