WILTON — Walking trails is the focus of a double presentation at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the First Congregational Church on Main Street.

Walking is easy, cheap and can be enjoyed around town, said Angela Werner for The Wilton Group, which is sponsoring the event. Everyone is invited.

Sandra Wyman of Wilton will present her work identifying trails in town, both on roads and in the woods, Werner said. The talk will include maps of walking routes that are close and available for year-round exercise.

For the second part of the presentation, Lorri Brown, program coordinator for the Healthy Community Coalition, will discuss opportunities for promoting what Wilton has to offer through the group’s Maine Trailfinder program, Brown said Friday.

With an interest in promoting physical activity, the coalition started Mapping Our Footsteps in 2009 with a grant from the Environmental Funders Network, she said. The work being done in Franklin County to identify trails has developed into a free, public website at www.mainetrailfinder.com.

Eventually, the work will hopefully become a tool and model for a statewide trail projects, she said.

Trails listed on the site are ones that local people have suggested, photographed and described. Suggestions for trails are checked out before being listed, first to see if the property owner is agreeable to have the trail listed, and second to be sure it’s ready for hikers, not too rough or muddy, she added.

“This is an excellent project for community groups and families. It gets you outside, walking, hiking, enjoying all the beauty of western Maine and it’s free,” Brown said.

Tuesday’s program is part of of an ongoing series sponsored by The Wilton Group as part of its mission “to preserve, enhance, and promote the unique character of Wilton by facilitating communication, engagement and cooperation in the community.” For more information, call 779-9026 or e-mail: [email protected]
