SOUTH PARIS — Doreen Lang of South has published her first book, “Journey Through Pastor’s Pear Tree.”
She started the book while living with her pastor, Bruce Tyner, and his family, she said. The Lang house had been condemned because of mold and the Tyners had offered their home to Lang, her husband and two children.
Charlie, her oldest son, would watch Tyner feed the turkeys under his pear tree.
In the story, Charlie falls asleep under the tree and is whisked to a land of talking turkeys. He is told the story of Jesus through colors from the wordless book, which uses gold, black, red, white and green to depict heaven, sin, Jesus’ death, washing away of sin and Christian growth. Through his visit with the talking turkeys, Charlie is a changed boy who comes to understand about Jesus.
The 48-page book is geared for ages 8 to 13. It was published through WestBow Press, a division of Thomas Nelson. WestBow helps authors self-publish books of all genres, specializing in books with Christian morals, inspirational themes and family values.
The colorful cover along with some of the pages were illustrated by artist Brenda Ellis Sauro, owner of the Painted Mermaid Gallery on Briggs Avenue in South Paris.
Sauro said she enjoyed illustrating the book, which is the second children’s book she has done. She described Lang’s book as a delightful read.
Sauro lives in South Paris with her husband, Michael, who is an award-winning metal sculpture artist. She also teaches oil painting and rug hooking classes to adults and children.
Lang said her book is available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and WestBow Press. It is also available as an e-book.
The prolific writer of poetry and children’s puppet shows said she has started her second book, “Jacob’s Clearing.”
