I know an underage young man who recently went to Foxwoods for the first time. He came home wondering how anyone could be against building a casino in Oxford, citing how much fun it was, how huge it was, and how easy it was to get in and gamble (no one asked him for an ID).
Plus, the best thing, he said, was that as long as you keep gambling and gambling, they give you free drinks. Imagine.
I’ve only been to a casino once, a Harrah’s in New Orleans. It, too, was huge; enormous rooms, one after another, with scattered, isolated people, a constant ding of machines, and young women dressed in skimpy, sparkly costumes.
I had looked forward to going (I love to play poker) but after only an hour, I had to leave because it made me so sad.
I hope voters vote no on Question 1. Sure, it’s a gamble and gambling can be fun. But we all know this: more than 99 percent of the time, when you gamble, you lose.
