LIVERMORE — George M. Blaisdell Jr., 85, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Oct. 10, at his residence on Federal Road in Livermore.

He was born Jan. 3, 1925, in Canaan, Vt., the son of George Sr. and Marion (Marshall) Blaisdell. In his younger years, George was an Eagle Scout and also played classical guitar. He was a 1943 graduate of Rumford High School. He served as a medical technician in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 123rd General Hospital in the European Theatre.

When he returned home, he earned his bachelor’s degree in forest engineering through the University of Maine at Orono. During his years at UMO he played on the football team. On Nov. 19, 1955, in St. George, PQ, Canada, he married his wife of 50 years, Gemma A. Fortin. She passed away on March 5, 2006.

George started his career with the International Paper woodlands department, cruising timber and surveying for roads in the Big 6 Township in northern Maine, where he took his first solo flight. He retired after 43 years as superintendent of maintenance and engineering. He was a registered Maine guide and commercial rated pilot, Part 135 International Air Taxi licensed, with over 12,000 hours. He was a bush pilot and flew in the Arctic Circle.

He served on the board of directors for the Boy Scouts and was past president of the Motorola Forestry Radio and Communications organization. He owned several hunting and fishing camps in Quebec and in northern Maine. George was an avid Patriots fan.

He is survived by his son, Michael Blaisdell and his wife, Donna, of Livermore; three daughters, Louise Blaisdell of Atlanta, Ga., Kay Blaisdell of Hallowell and Anne (Christine) Blaisdell of Waldoboro; grandchildren, Jasmine Castonguay and  husband, Johnny, of Livermore, Zach Blaisdell and wife, Tia, of Livermore Falls and Andrew Camarata Jr. of Portland; great-grandchildren, Jaden, Ethan, Trinity and Emma; and his brother, James Blaisdell and wife, Anne, of Rockwood.
