100 years ago, 1910

The farmers are now busy harvesting their apples and potatoes. The potato crop in this section of the State is much larger than usual this year and the “spuds” are said to be of exceptionally fine quality. The apple crop is reported to be below the average in size, but the fruit is of good quality.

50 years ago, 1960

A miniature poodle owned by a Greenwich, Conn., woman took the best-in-show honors at the 11th annual all-breed dog show and obedience trial yesterday at the Lewiston Memorial Armory.

Some 268 dogs were entered in the all-day show sponsored by the Lewiston Auburn Kennel Club. Dogs owned by two Auburn residents and four other residents of the Twin City area won best-of-breed awards.

25 years ago, 1985

SABATTUS — A new effort to attract a general practitioner and small pharmacy was launched at a meeting of selectmen here Tuesday night.

Selectman Gerard Roy asked the board if he could renew efforts to attempt to mediate a situation that would bring a doctor and a pharmacy into town.

Because Sabattus’ population is growing steadily, the need for medical services is important, Roy said. “The more people there are, the more services must be provided for the people in order to maintain a certain quality of life,” he said.
