FARMINGTON — An Augusta truck driver remained in jail Friday accused of forcing a New Sharon woman to have sex, according to a Maine State Police affidavit.

Christopher D. Bennett, 39, was arrested on a felony charge of gross sexual assault early Thursday while he was sitting in a tractor-trailer at the Irving Big Stop in Auburn, state Trooper Joshua Birmingham said. The trucker was scheduled to deliver a load of paper to Virginia on Thursday.

Bennett is being held at Somerset County Jail in Madison on $2,000 cash bail or $20,000 worth of real estate. A conviction on the charges carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison.

The woman reported to police Wednesday that she was sexually assaulted by Bennett after she told him to stop what he was doing and he did not, Birmingham said in an affidavit. Bennett was known to the woman, he said.

Bennett has no criminal history of sexual assault, Birmingham said.

According to Franklin County Superior Court documents, Bennett is forbidden to have contact with the woman or enter her residence, place of employment or place of education.

A conference on the case is set for Jan. 21, 2011.
