ORONO (AP) — The University of Maine is receiving $5.5 million from the Harold Alfond Foundation, one of the state’s most generous donors, for a pair of athletic projects.

The gift includes $3.5 million for renovations of the Alfond Hockey Arena. In addition, a $2 million challenge grant will help pay for renovations to the Memorial Gym and Field House at the Orono campus.

Gov. John Baldacci says the gift is in step with the legacy that Harold Alfond left the state, especially in support of educational institutions.
