A Joel Kase flier states that Sen. Margaret Craven voted against LD 254 — a bill that would have enacted a five-point welfare reform package, including a 90-day residency. Because I have read that almost 30 percent of Maine residents are on some form of public assistance, I contacted Craven with my concerns.

First she responded, “Nobody in the House or Senate got to vote on this bill; it did not make it out of committee.” When I sent her the roll call (#149) from the Legislature’s website, she acknowledged her error, and then wrote, “I do not remember voting on the bill, and I should have done my research.”

Given the $1 billion budget shortfall, welfare reform will be very important.

I feel Dr. Joel Kase better understands this issue, and he will have my vote.
