LEWISTON — Members of all area veterans organizations and the public are invited to attend memorial services at noon Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Veterans Memorial Park.
The services will commemorate the anniversaries of the terrorist truck bombing of the U.S. Marine Corps barracks where 241 marines and U.S. Naval personnel lost their lives on Oct. 23, 1983, in Beirut, Lebanon, and the terrorist boat bombing of the U.S.S. Cole where 17 crew members lost their lives on Oct. 12, 2000, at the refueling docks in Yemen.
The program will open with the singing of the national anthem by the assembly followed by an invocation given by the Rev. Douglas Taylor. The history of the United States Marine Corps will be presented by Roland Cyr, past commandant, Central Maine Marine Corps League.
Jerry DerBoghosian, president emeritus of the U.S.S. Canberra Association, will present details of both terrorist bombings. A proclamation for the occasion will be read by past commander of Post 135 American Legion, Sabattus, followed by the singing of the service songs by the assembly.
“Taps” and “God Bless America” will close the ceremony. The services will be held rain or shine. For more information, contact DerBoghosian at 353-7435 or Roland Cyr at 782-3057.
