DEAR SUN SPOTS: Museum L-A, the Story of Work and Community in Lewiston-Auburn, offers various opportunities for volunteers. From assisting with the front kiosk to helping with tours and daily operations, volunteering is a great way to learn more about the museum and to give back to the community. Computer proficiency is especially appreciated.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am looking for a 1986 edition of Better Homes & Gardens Country Craft Ideas. It contains instructions and a pattern for a floppy-eared dog. My mother had made these for my boys She had the pattern cut out in an envelope but no directions on sewing it together. I would like to make some for my grandchildren.

I have tried contacting Better Homes & Gardens. There is a spot on their website for past editions, but it does not seem to work. I would appreciate any help getting a copy of these directions. Thanks so much. — Shannon Staples, memories@megalink.net, 645-4260

ANSWER: Sun Spots did not find it on their website either, but that’s not too surprising, as 1986 was well before the Internet age. If you know exactly what issue, you may be able to buy a copy. There should be a contact address in the front of the magazine. Also, some similar titles showed up on a google search, so you may be able to find it from an online retailer or eBay.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m afraid I gave you the wrong phone number for donating digital cameras (5 megapixels or better) to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine’s Auburn-Lewiston Clubhouse in my Oct. 14 letter. The correct number is 782-2446. — Andie Hannon, unit director

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have two questions:

Why is my back lawn turning to moss? Mine isn’t the only one, but no one seems to know.

A Red Sox player was called up to Boston from the minor leagues on Monday afternoon. He played in the game at 7 p.m. that night. He had a uniform all fitted, a number and his name sewed on the back. How do they do all that in such a short few hours?

Thanks a lot. — Peru Logger

ANSWER: Moss likes cool, damp conditions. Do you have trees in your backyard? When the trees were small, the grass could grow between them, but as they grew and spread, less sunlight gets through, and moss takes over. Most grasses don’t do well in the shade, but there are varieties you can plant that will grow in limited sunlight.

As for the Red Sox, the team has plenty of support personnel to see to things like getting uniforms onto new players. Along with a supply of uniforms, the Sox would have people to see to their care, mending rips, sewing on numbers and laundering services. After all, it’s not like the players take their uniforms home for their moms to wash!
