WEST PARIS — Keepers of the Soap Box Derby shack are offering a reward for the apprehension of vandals who broke into the shack this summer, damaging the building and stealing cases of soda.

“They stole at least six or seven cases,” said Nancy Henderson, who runs the  shack. “They didn’t touch anything. They just wanted the sodas.”

Henderson said the break-ins occurred after two Soap Box Derbies, and each time a padlock and doorknob were broken. The thieves also knocked over picnic tables and broke a flip window on the side of the shack. Damage was estimated at several hundred dollars.

“We haven’t had another derby, and they haven’t broken back in again,” she said.

Henderson thinks those responsible knew when the shack would be filled with cans of Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Sprite and other kinds of soda, which the organization pays for.

Henderson said the shack was built about six years ago for participants in the derby and other activities at the site.

“It really did make it very nice to keep it (the soda) there until you got a bunch of yahoos,” she said.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to contact Henderson at 674-2936 or call the West Paris Town Office.
