AUBURN — Community Little Theatre will hold auditions next month for Christopher Sergel’s stage adaptation of Harper Lee’s classic novel “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

Directed by Linda Britt, the play has a large cast and will require significant rehearsal time for principal characters.

“To Kill a Mockingbird” is set in 1935 in rural Maycomb, a dusty small town in southern Alabama. Atty. Atticus Finch has been assigned to defend Tom Gordon, who stands accused of raping a young woman, Mayella Ewell. Because Gordon is black, Atticus and his children, Scout and Jem, are harassed by racist inhabitants of the town. The play covers the time after Gordon’s arrest, through the trial and afterward. In the novel this is a three-year period; the time is compressed in the stage production.

Anyone who wishes to audition should be forewarned that the play contains language that will be offensive to many. It is language that reflects the time and place.

Auditions for children’s roles will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, at Great Falls Art Center, 30 Academy St. Auditions for adults will be at 6:30 p.m. that day and on  Tuesday, Nov. 9.

“To Kill a Mockingbird” will be performed Feb. 4-13. Scripts are available at the CLT box office. For more information, call 783-0958 or visit www.laclt.com.
