I read in the Oct. 17 Sun Journal that the backers of the Lewiston casino are urging a “no” vote on the Oxford casino. That doesn’t surprise me in the least. Maine is being sold promises of jobs and tax revenues by people who stand to make a tremendous amount of money.

I also read in the Oct. 15 paper that last year the Boston Globe reported that Foxwoods was struggling to survive under $2 billion in debt.

If these facilities are such a good thing, why not have the operator’s license contingent on the promised number of Maine jobs and that Maine’s share of the income come off the top. That way the state would be assured of the “$282.6 million in sales revenue, 2,784 full- and part-time jobs, and $80.7 million in wages, salaries and benefits.”

I don’t believe that these promises will ever be realized and we will be left with the problems. I have lived in the Lewiston-Auburn area for the better part of 40 years and have seen them become the vibrant cities they are today without a quick fix.

I think Maine can do better than that.
