LEWISTON — SeniorsPlus board of directors member Margaret Ross was presented the first annual Margaret Ross Award for outstanding community service by Patricia Vampatella, president of SeniorsPlus board of directors, at the third annual Aging Well Living Well Expo held Oct. 1 at Sunday River’s Grand Summit Hotel.

Ross has been an avid volunteer for SeniorsPlus for the past 9 years; her work has become an integral part of SeniorsPlus outreach. She specializes in providing Medicare counseling to hundreds of individuals throughout the year, saving them money needed for other necessities of life.

She has developed a rapport with consumers and become a trusted resource for them. Ross often travels with the SeniorsPlus Mobile Office to take her knowledge into the more rural parts of the organization’s service area, providing staff support and Medicare counseling to consumers who cannot travel to the office in Lewiston for an individual appointment.

In addition to providing direct services to consumers, she participates in additional training and staff meetings. Keeping her knowledge up to date in the ever-changing world of Medicare makes her invaluable in assisting with the training of other volunteers.

Ross also serves SeniorsPlus as a member of the board of directors and was recently appointed secretary to the board of directors. By serving on the board, she helps provide organizational support to the professional staff, assists policy setting for the agency and helps ensure the viability of SeniorsPlus.

She has committed more than 700 hours a year to SeniorsPlus. In addition to volunteering with SeniorsPlus, Ross is a trustee and officer of the CMMC College of Nursing and Health Professions, a board member of the statewide Maine Association of Retirees, a board member and officer of the philanthropic Women’s Hospital Association of CMMC and an auction volunteer at Maine Public Television.
