Maine was recently rated by Forbes.com as the worst state in which to do business. Last year, Sen. Margaret Craven voted for LD 1495, a bill that would have enacted more than 100 new taxes on items and increased the tax on meals and lodging.
Those policies place a heavy burden on the Lewiston businesses and families who are already struggling.
Fortunately, before taking effect, that law was soundly repealed by Maine voters in a referendum in June 2010.
During the past century, four generations of the Simones family have operated our hot dog stand in Lewiston. Sen. Craven does not understand the challenges facing small businesses or working families in Lewiston.
