NEWRY — The International Fire and Police Winter Games are coming to Sunday River Ski Resort for its first event in 10 years. Scheduled for Jan. 16 to 21, 2011, the last winter games were to take place in Interlaken, Switzerland, in 2001, but were cancelled in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy.

Proceeds from various events at the game will benefit the Shriners Hospital Children’s Burn Center in Boston, Mass., and the Special Olympics Organization.

Founded in Rumford, the IFPWG uses competition in giant slalom, slalom, snowboarding, firefighter hose races, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, ice hockey and curling to promote physical fitness during the winter months while celebrating the prowess and athleticism of the world’s fire and law-enforcements agencies.

The week of competitions includes other family-friendly events such as a buffet dinner, an awards ceremony, dancing and presentations, including the Firefighter and Police Officer of the Year awards for 2011.

All law enforcement agencies, corrections officers, active military, cadets, fire service, career and volunteer (active and retired) and junior firefighters are eligible to compete as well as department personnel from any country, province, state and county, including spouses.
