Like a lot of combat veterans, I like to go to Foxwoods and always vote for casinos.
Like a lot of people in Maine, I like to go to Foxwoods, but I don’t mind waiting one more year for the Lewiston casino. It’s a better deal for Maine and especially those of us who live near Lewiston.
But the biggest reason I’ll be voting No on One is that the Lewiston casino group remembers veterans.
Veterans fought for the freedom to vote, make money and spend it as people see fit. It’s nice to see the Lewiston casino group is giving some of that money back to veterans. More than $1.2 million per year will go to help seniors and veterans’ organization such as the VFW and American Legion.
The Oxford casino doesn’t give one penny to seniors or veterans. Instead, their bill puts millions of dollars in profit in the investors’ pockets and actually gives less slot revenue back to the state than the Lewiston entry.
As an accountant with an MBA from Bentley, I don’t have a problem with a company turning a profit, but to rewrite the tax rules the way Oxford did, to give less money back to the taxpayers than Lewiston and Bangor, and then increase their profits by millions is just plain wrong.
As a Lewiston-Auburn resident and a veteran, I will be voting against the Oxford casino.
