SUMNER — Code Enforcement Officer Sidney Abbott produced paperwork from the Maine Department of Transportation and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to confirm that the dam at the outlet of Labrador Pond belongs to the town.
It means the town is liable for all maintenance, selectmen were told at their meeting Tuesday night.
The bridge and dam on Valley Road were built in 2000. The DEP told Abbott in a letter that the original dimensions of the dam must remain the same.
There has been discussion by waterfront property owners about the height of the water on the pond and rocks that have mysteriously appeared on top of the original dam to raise the water level. As a result, some basements have been flooded and water over Labrador Pond Road has resulted in washouts.
Abbott showed a picture of the original dam and said there are rocks on the dam now that were not on the original dam. He said some rocks had to be taken off, but the DEP should be contacted.
Road Commissioner Jim Keach reported he had patched all of the potholes on all of the paved roads and had done some grading. He also said the speed radar trailer was parked in front of Beeps Bakery on Route 219 and he planned to move it to Hartford-Sumner Elementary School on Friday.
Board of Selectmen Chairman Mary Ann Haxton asked if there was any information stored in the radar. Keach said there was a laptop, but he had not been downloading the speeds. Haxton asked him to hook it up to receive the data. Town Clerk Susan Runes said she would try to download the information.
