LISBON — In contested races for Town Council, incumbent Fernand Larochelle Jr. is being challenged by Dorothy Fitzgerald and Richard Graham for an at-large seat and Roger Bickford and James Lemieux are vying for a three-year seat in District 2.

All other races in Tuesday’s local election are uncontested.

Councilor-at-large

Fernand Larochelle Jr., 44, is a Lisbon native and lifetime resident. He has been a self-employed collision repairman for 30 years at Fern’s Body Shop and is a single father of two grown children. In his fourth year on the Town Council, he is chairman of the Town Audit Committee and has served on the School Facilities Committee. He is a graduate of Lisbon High School and chairman of the Maine Auto Collision Alliance. He is seeking re-election because he sees some changes coming up for the town and feels a lot of good things are also coming up. His goals if re-elected: cutting the town budget without cutting services, maintaining and improving the level of education, expanding economic development and bringing new businesses into town.

Dorothy Fitzgerald, 79, has lived in Lisbon since 1958 and is a native of Pejepscot. She has been a Realtor for 30-plus years with Jerry Douglass Realty and is a widow with five children, 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She has served on the town’s Budget Advisory Board. She is a 1949 graduate of Lisbon High School and is a member of the Lisbon Area Chamber of Commerce and the Lisbon Merchants Association. She is seeking office because as a member of the Budget Advisory Board, she has suggested ways to cut the town budget but says nobody listened, so she decided to run for the council where she hopes to make a difference. Goals if elected: creating more open government and accountability, establishing higher standards for hearings, retaining current businesses and bringing in new ones to broaden the tax base, representing citizens on town boards and capitalizing on the town’s assets.

Richard Graham, 44, is a Maine native and has been a resident of Lisbon for 11 years. He is married, with three grown children, three grandchildren and another on the way. He is a high school graduate and has served on the town Budget Advisory Board. He is a commercial truck driver for Douglas Trucking. He is seeking office because he is “very fiscally conservative” on government issues and has several ideas on how to cut spending. Goals if elected: taking a serious approach to reducing the budget, consolidating the Public Works and Solid Waste departments to reduce administrative costs, putting some work out to bid, consolidating police chief and fire chief positions into a single public safety director, reducing the police budget. He says the government should only do for the citizens what they cannot do for themselves.

Town Council District 2

Roger Bickford, 57, is a Lisbon native. He is married with three grown children and three grandchildren. He graduated from Lisbon High School and Central Maine Vocational-Technical Institute and is a self-employed mechanic. He is a member of the National Rifle Association and the Topsham Trail Riders, and is a former member of Lisbon Fish and Game. He is seeking office because things in town “are getting out of hand; officials are not listening to the people.” Goals if elected: cutting taxes and trying to make government accountable to taxpayers in a civilized way. “I want to answer taxpayers’ questions truthfully, not give them the runaround when they come to meetings. I want to be sure their questions are answered.”

James Lemieux, 42, is a Lewiston native who has lived in Lisbon for 24 years. He is married with three children. He graduated from high school and attended technical college for one year. He has been a utility company worker for 15 years and is a member of the Lisbon Boosters and the Lisbon Falls Fire Department. Goals if elected: keeping taxes low, streamlining town government, helping with school budgets to keep education levels high.
