The Catholic Church teaches that “human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person — among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life. ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.’” (No. 2270 Catechism of the Catholic Church.)
People cannot ignore the intrinsically grave moral evil of abortion, and that 1.2 million abortions a year take place in this nation alone. Many candidates for political office say they personally oppose abortion but are pro-choice. To be pro-choice is to say that it’s each woman’s responsibility to decide whether to choose this grave moral evil. To do so, it seems to me, is to say that it’s not that bad after all. If some enrich themselves thereby, well, so be it. And if the government subsidizes it directly or indirectly, that’s fine too.
The right to life was endowed to us by the creator. If people don’t defend it, the creator will hold people accountable.
The vote on Nov. 2 should reflect a person’s belief in the inviolable right to life for the unborn. It’s the great moral challenge of this time which can undermine the very foundation of this nation.
