NEW GLOUCESTER — Newton E. Swift passed away with his family at his side on Oct. 30.
Newt was born in Boston, Mass., the son of Newton Swift and Ruth Drake Swift. Newt joined the 3rd division of the Marine Corp at the age of 17 to protect America during World War II. He was proud of witnessing the raising of both flags at Iwo Jima. He was a proud American. Upon returning back to the States, Newt began a long career in “highway engineering,” retiring to his much beloved cottage on Sabbathday Lake in New Gloucester. Upon marrying the love of his life, Kay, they spent many hours touring the lake in his favorite motor boat, traveling, as they became inseparable, they enjoyed all life offered as the cute couple they were.
Newt is survived by his wife, Katherine Grover Swift, of New Gloucester; and his sister, Pauline Estabrook and her husband, Myron, of Maine He was the proud father of his son Steven, of California; his daughter, Deanna Felker, of New York; his son, David of Connecticut, his son, James and his wife, Marjorie, of Connecticut; his daughter, Jennifer Woodtke and her husband, Robert, of Connecticut. He is also survived by his six stepdaughters, Susie Gamberdella and her husband, Paul, of New Jersey, Carol Hamel of Connecticut, Patricia Shea and her husband, John, of New York, Carol Grover and her husband, Jeffrey Snipe, Martha Garnett and her husband, Jeffery and Sharon Morse and her husband, Mark, all of Maine. He is also survived by a special nephew, Ted Day, and Papa Newt was proud of his 24 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He also loved his cat, Spooky; and the many other pets throughout his lifetime.
In addition to being predeceased by both of his parents, Hazel; and his sister, Martha Day; Newt lost his beloved daughter, Tamara, at the age of 14. He was ready to be reunited with Tammy and his Savior Jesus in Heaven. His family rejoices in the new life he has begun.
