WEST PARIS — Bertha E. Smart, 84, of Mechanic Falls died Sunday, Oct. 31, at Ledgeview Living Center.

She was born in Norway. June 10, 1926, the daughter of Willard and Miriam Hadley Smart.

She resided in Mechanic Falls all of her life with Archie and Doris Edwards. She attended local school and graduated from Mechanic Falls High School.

Bertha was a dedicated caregiver to Archie and Doris until their deaths; she then worked at Tripp Lake Girls Camp. She enjoyed her work at the camp.

Bertha had resided at Ledgeview Living Center since 2007. She had a quick wit about her, always having a comeback answer; she often said she lived up to her name Smart. Dining out, watching birds, reading and having a cat sit in her lap were what made her happy.

She is survived by a niece, Miriam Ayotte and husband, Gerald, of Mechanic Falls; a nephew, Philip Wallace and wife, Holly, of Phippsburg; her friend, Linda Goodwin, who was often asked if they were mother and daughter; Linda’s husband Peter, Wendy and Robert Brown, Judy and Peter Green and the children of the Brown’s and Green’s, who looked up to Bertha as a grandmother, Laura, Shelby, Abby, Peter Jr. and Nick, all of Poland.

She was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Walter, George and Henry; and a sister, Isabelle Wallace.

Thanks to the staff at Ledgeview Living Center, Becky Richards, the caregivers, who laughed at her jokes and smart answers, and the many other staff members who took wonderful care of Bertha and were a daily part of Bertha’s life.
