AUBURN — Twin Cities mayors won’t be alone this month as they endeavor to grow facial hair.

Lewiston Maineiacs Governor Bill Schurman said his entire organization will forgo shaving in an effort to draw attention to prostate cancer. Schurman brought the entire team to Auburn City Council chambers to kick off the effort and outline the rules.

October was Breast Cancer awareness month, he said. The Maineiacs and the Androscoggin Bank Colisee hosted many events to bring attention to Breast Cancer treatment.

“The ladies do a very good job spreading awareness about cancer awareness,” Schurman said. “But men have a cancer we need to be aware of too, but we’re not so organized.”

All of the Maineiacs men, from players to employees, will do their best to grow mustaches over the next 25 days.

But only the upper lips of Auburn Mayor Dick Gleason and Lewiston Mayor Larry Gilbert will get special scrutiny. They’ll compete to grow the most attractive mustaches. The winner will be decided at the Maineacs game versus Moncton on Nov. 26, decided by a group of season ticket holders.
