PORTLAND — A Rockland-based health care organization has won federal and state approval to become part of the MaineHealth system of hospitals.

Pen Bay Healthcare announced Wednesday it has been cleared by the Federal Trade Commission and the state to join MaineHealth, a nonprofit network that includes Maine Medical Center in Portland and more than a dozen other hospitals and health care organizations.

Pen Bay Healthcare owns Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport and a number of medical offices and extended care and hospice facilities in Maine’s midcoast region. Pen Bay’s board will vote on final approval of the agreement on Nov. 15.

Hospital officials say the agreement will allow for more collaboration among hospitals in how they deliver health care services.
