MEXICO — Police have charged a 17-year-old boy with felony possession of a firearm, theft and possession of stolen property.

The boy, who is currently in a juvenile detention center, had previously been charged with 29 counts of burglary and theft in connection with a spree that took place in town during August and September.

The felony shotgun charge is separate from the burglary-and-theft incidents,  Sgt. Roy Hodsdon said. The gun charge was made Tuesday.

He said two sawed-off shotguns were recovered with the help of the Rumford Police Department.

Most of the stolen property taken from homes, garages and sheds in the Backkingdom Road, and Fourth, Fifth and Pine streets areas has been recovered. This includes a GPS unit, fishing tackle, a metal detector, a wallet and numerous other items.

Hodsdon said most of the items have been returned to their owners.

At least one other person is believed to have taken part in the late summer burglary-and-theft spree, Hodsdon said.

“We know he didn’t do this alone. Other charges are pending,” he said.

In other police matters, Hodsdon said a moose was killed at 6:40 p.m. Oct. 29 when it was hit by a 2001 Ford pickup truck driven by Joel D. Thompson, 27, of Poplar Hill Road, Mexico.

Thompson was traveling south on the Roxbury Road when the moose came out of the woods and stood in the road. The pickup sustained $5,000 damage.
