AUBURN — The 13-way race for the Androscoggin County Charter Commission — the group charged with writing new rules for county government — remained somewhat undecided Wednesday.
Four of the seats have winners: Charles “Chip” Morrison and Robert Mennealy, both of Auburn, won the second district with votes of 4,783 and 4,323, respectively. In Lewiston, the county’s third-district winners were Helen Poulin with 4,519 votes and Richard Grandmaison with 4,090.
However, with only 13 of the county’s 14 towns releasing numbers on the charter contest, the county’s first district race was still undecided. Turner declined to release information on the charter vote.
Each of the three candidates in the district, which includes Durham, Lisbon, Sabattus, Wales, Leeds, Greene, Livermore, Livermore Falls and Turner, were write-ins.
The tally, without Turner results, was 58 for Richard Gross of Turner, 49 for Scott Lansley of Sabattus and 29 for Deborah Moran of Greene. The top two vote-getters will be elected.
The six elected members of the Charter Commission will join three appointees.
By state statute, the County Commission must appoint one of its members to the group, a local municipal office and a member of the Maine Legislature.
The County Commission has until Dec. 2 to make appointments.
When formed, the Charter Commission will be charged with examining the makeup of the county and the rules under which it operates. It will then draft a proposed charter, which will go to voters for approval or rejection.
