PARIS — The newly elected register of deeds for Oxford County said she will spend the next few months getting to know the office staff before her term begins Jan. 1.

Democrat Patricia Shearman of Norway was elected Tuesday and will replace Jane Rich of Andover. Shearman, 61, received 10,254 votes, while Marjorie Risica of Paris got 9,734.

Shearman said she plans to work with Rich to make the transition as smooth as possible.

“My plans are to get to know the team of county officers and the dedicated folks who work at the registry,” Shearman said, “to see how we can best work together to serve the public.”

The register of deeds is responsible for the documentation of anything related to land, such as sales, foreclosures, lines of equity, tax liens, probate issues, subdivisions, and any other real estate transaction. The office is located in the county building on Western Avenue.

Shearman said she was thankful to her longtime friend Jan Cardoza, who made her an old-fashioned “election cake” to celebrate her win.

“An election cake is a custom started in the late 1700s that includes dried fruits, whiskey, raisins and yeast,” Shearman said.

An avid historian, grant-writer, technology expert and former small business owner, Shearman is a native of Waterville who has lived in Oxford County for 21 years. She has degrees in sociology and American and New England studies, along with years of experience in bookkeeping and payroll work.
